Filling the Rooms of Our House

Since my last post things have improved in our home. There is still room for much improvement, but we are definitely moving in the right direction. I have more work to do on my attitudes and reactions, as does My Only Sunshine, but there is a more peaceful atmosphere now than there was in January. I am very thankful to our heavenly Father for this progress and pray that it continues.

My Only Sunshine and I have been reading through Proverbs, a chapter each day, for the last couple of months. I am convicted every day by something we read! Do you ever read a verse or passage that really burrows itself into your heart? Well, the following verse has done that to me.

Proverbs 24:3-4 - "By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches."

I love to shop for decorative items at thrift stores and yard sales that add charm to our "country" home - pretty baskets, small kerosene lamps, pictures with scripture on them, anything reminiscent of days from a simpler time and place. These possessions add beauty and comfort to the world inside our house. But how much greater the blessings that await our family when we fill our rooms with the precious and pleasant riches that come from wisdom, understanding and knowledge!

The acquisition of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge does not happen effortlessly. It takes continued and diligent work. This is easily understood in an academic sense. But what about in a spiritual context?

I find it so easy when life becomes overly busy to neglect my personal Bible study and prayer time. Then, not only do I begin to drown in the chaos of my life, I am not increasing in wisdom, understanding and knowledge; I am not able to do my part to fill our rooms with treasures. If I am not fulfilling my personal responsibilities, what kind of teacher am I to My Only Sunshine? I am renewing my comittment to make Bible study and prayer a daily priority - so valuable a part of my day that I do not let anything push it aside!
